We often hear the question, “How can I improve our search engine rankings for phrases like…?” Don’t worry, we get it. More high ranking phrases can lead to more traffic, but that content needs to first exist somewhere on your website while providing value to your visitors. It should not just be there to be there. Plus, search engines are smart enough to know when things seem out of place. Here are some tips on what can be done to boost rankings.

Getting found in other service areas

Plain and simple, people search more for what is nearby. Your business may rank well for the city where the business is located. But what about the next town over which you still serve, you just don’t have a physical location in that town? How do you get more exposure to rank for that town?

Miriam Ellis with Moz (a leading source in search engine marketing resources) went into good detail on what businesses can do to create content for surrounding areas. Local Landing Pages: A Guide To Great Implementation In Every Situation

After reading the article, you are probably thinking “I don’t have the time or resources to create that content.” This is when it is best to hire a company to help generate this content for you. However, if you have the time and ambition, Miriam does a very good job at guiding you through what is needed.

When was the last time you changed the text on your website?

Keep it fresh. Not only should content on your website be updated on a routine basis for search engines, it gives your current visitors a reason to come back. Stale content will be the slow death of your website rankings. Text changes are quick to make so you shouldn’t see any hefty bills from web design companies. It is even cheaper if your website is on a content management system like WordPress, which allows you to make changes on the fly without any third party involvement. It also nicely leads to the next section.

What is a blog and why is blogging so important?

Content is king! Say you have a 5 page website with a blog. If you were to do one blog post per month, you will have added 12 more pages to your website. You are now a 17 page website. Take it a step further, lets get crazy. If you do one blog post a week, you will have a 57 page website by the end of the year. But why do the amount of pages matter?

A single page is limited to 1 unique title description, 1 unique meta description, and limited amounts of text for the actual content making it very difficult to fit all of the different services or things a business does. By spreading it out, a single page can focus on one topic making it much more relavant in the eyes of a search engine.

The steps above are not any secret formulas nor is it anywhere near rocket science. The common factor is time. It takes time to generate and grow while being consistent. How much time will you dedicate or is your time better spent on other tasks while someone else helps take on this workload?
